India vs. Zimbabwe – 1st ODI – 2013 Series – Betting Predictions and Tips

An India versus Zimbabwe tour does not ring the same bell as India vs. Pakistan or India vs. Australia. However, this tour will firmly put the spotlight on India’s young and restless. With MS Dhoni taking a break, Virat Kohli will once again be burdened with the responsibility of captaincy though he would be definitely looking forward to it. A tour that may seem useless on paper is actually a chance for the younger players to show their potential and make the selectors take notice. Some of the big names missing the tour are MS Dhoni, R Ashwin and Ishant Sharma.

Wait just a minute!! Does this feel like déjà vu? A young Indian side going to Zimbabwe fails to beat Zimbabwe fifty over encounter. Yes, this did happen during the Tri series featuring India, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in the year 2010. A young side led by Suresh Raina failed to beat Zimbabwe and ended up not making the cut for the Tri-series final. So, there will be extra pressure on this Indian side to ensure that the performance of 2010 does not get repeated this time around. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe would fancy their chances against a relatively weaker Team India in a manner of speaking.

Zimbabwe

The chief architect of both of Zimbabwe’s wins against India in the previous tour was Brendon Taylor, who is turning out to be a gem of a batsman for his team. Will Captain Taylor do it for his side again? Taylor did not have the responsibility of being captain of the team the last time India toured Zimbabwe. However, Taylor would like to lead from the front and look to become a thorn in India’s paw once again. All this drama unfolds pretty soon with India taking on hosts Zimbabwe tomorrow at Harare.

India

Though India has some youngsters in their side, the same can also be said for the hosts who have a balance of the old and the young. A lot will reside on the batting performance of Zimbabwe as India’s batting can threaten to take away any and every match outside the reach of their opponents. Although, this may well be easier said than done as Zimbabwe do have some smart spinners in the side namely Ray Price, Graeme Cremer and the experienced Prosper Utseya. Ray Price, the wily old left arm orthodox bowler will enjoy bowling to his previous teammates Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu from the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.

Our Predictions

No Dhoni in the side means Dinesh Karthik will don the wicket keeping gloves while Ambati Rayudu may make his one day international debut. The other batsman in the side who can pip Rayudu is opener Ajinkya Rahane but Rayudu may still get the go ahead since the opening slots are already filled by Rohit Sharma and the swashbuckling Shikhar Dhawan. Shikhar Dhawan is in rollicking form at the moment so getting him out early tomorrow will go a long way in putting Zimbabwe on the track to beat India in yet another One Day match.
